How tight do I wind up my Britain Clock Company Mantel Clock?

Posting date: 15th February 2011 14:16

We had a customer who could not get his Britain Clock Company Mantel Clock to work properly. It transpired that he was underwinding it.

The mantel clocks need to have 2 half turns to get to the point where the spring is engaged. You will then feel resistance. Keep going! The clock needs about 8 or 9 half turns to be fully wound up.

Some customers are concerned about overwinding and possibly damaging the spring. It is possible to overwind but it does take some force to do so. If you follow the instructions above, you should be ok. Our customer had been stopping after the first 2 half turns and when he felt resistance as the spring started to engaged he stopped.
