A brief explanation of the Quartz Clock
Posting date: 3rd May 2007 17:34
Since the 1970s quartz clocks have dominated the clock market.
Quartz time keeping is based on the "piezoelectric" property of the quartz crystal. When an electric field is applied to the crystal, it changes shape. Squeezing or bending the crystal then generates an electric field causing a vibration which in turn generates a constant electric signal which can be used for an electronic clock display.
The first wrist watches used "LED" or "Light Emitting Diode" display. But by the 1970s these had been replaced by a "LCD" or "Liquid Crystal Diplay"
Whilst quartz clocks are extremely accurate and reliable, the atomic or radio controlled clocks are now the most accurate clocks available. More on those another time!
