What is inside a Pendulum Clock?

If your pendulum clock or its instructions baffle you, here is a quick definition of the parts and what they do.
Pendulum clocks typically have four parts:
- 1. a mass at the end of a pendulum rod. The pendulum swings with a designed period that varies with the square root of its effective length.
- 2. an escapement system that passes energy to the pendulum to preserve oscillations and which releases the gear train in a step-by-step fashion
- 3. a gear train that slows the rapid escapement rotation to a rate matching the motor characteristics
- 4. an indicator system that records how often the escapement has rotated and therefore how much time has passed

NB If your clock has broken down and is not keeping time properly, rather than trying to sort this yourself, take it to your local jeweller or clock shop. It might be that it just needs a jolly good clean and a service. You might be able to do this yourself - but check with the experts first.
